Five questions to open up a bigger conversation.
Simple prompts that help you listen, notice and explore together.
You don't need a perfect career plan to have a useful conversation with your child. Start with their experience, listen without rushing to a conclusion, and make space for answers to change.
1. What made you curious this week?
Ask about something they wanted to understand. Curiosity can show up in a lesson, a game, a story or an everyday problem.
2. What did you enjoy doing, and why?
The reason can be more useful than the activity. Did they enjoy making something, solving a problem, helping someone or leading a group?
3. What would you like to try?
Think of a small, accessible experiment: a library book, a club, a creative project or a conversation with someone who does interesting work.
4. What feels difficult right now?
Make it safe to talk about uncertainty. You can work out together whether they need encouragement, support, practice or a different approach.
5. How can I support you?
Let your child help shape the next step. Offer options without turning every interest into a career decision.
